Email DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi Arabia will allow women into sports stadiums as of next year, the kingdom’s latest step toward easing rules on gender segregation — but they will be seated in the so-called family section, an area separate from the male-only crowd. Still, the decision, announced on Sunday, marks another incremental step toward greater women’s rights in the kingdom. Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive for first time The General Sports Authority described the decision as one that will allow “families” into the stadiums — a term authorities use to refer to the public spaces that accommodate women. These “family” sections are for women who are out on their own or who are accompanied by a male relative. Many restaurants and cafes, which often also have separate entrances for women, have similarly segregated seating arrangements. The authority said the three major sports stadiums in the capital, Riyadh, and the cities of Jiddah and Dammam will undergo renovations to accommodate families. The decision comes after the public appeared to welcome a decision to allow women to drive for the first time next year. Many also responded enthusiastically when women were allowed into the Riyadh stadium for national day celebrations last month.

The sole constitution that is used is the Quran, which all judges have to interpret conservatively. Many actions that are considered illegal have no actual written laws to ban them — a lot of them are not even addressed in the Quran. Some of these bans also occur in other countries, but this list is specifically about Saudi Arabia since I was born there and I grew up along with millions of others shackled by these laws. The penalty for violating that rule would lead to the store being shut down.

Saudi Arabia pushes for stricter rules on under marriage KSA GDN Online Desk The consent of the girl and her mother and the approval of the court are among the requirements in case of an under marriage, according to a recent recommendation by an ad-hoc inter-ministerial committee set up to look into the marriage of minors in Saudi Arabia. The committee said that the age of majority is 18 and all marriage contracts below that age must fulfill a list of requirements that include banning the health ministry from conducting premarital checkups for underage would-be brides without the approval of a judge.
No marriage contract can be drawn for underage girls outside the court and violators would be punished severely, the committee said in its recommendations, Saudi daily Okaz reported on Sunday. A judge looking into an application for underage marriage should summon the girl and hear directly from her that she was consenting to get married. He should also make sure the marriage does not pose any risks to her life.
The application should include medical reports from state doctors and experts about the physical and mental state of the girl to ensure there are no abuses. A social expert designated by the court should provide a report about the psychological compatibility of the two future spouses. The regulations recommended by the committee also require the judge to order the girl to join a programme for preparing girls about to get married that offers psychological training and a greater knowledge of family responsibilities following the marriage.
According to the committee, the same regulations should apply to non-Saudi girls under 18 living in Saudi Arabia. Marriages of underage non-Saudi girls contracted outside Saudi Arabia do not have to come under the regulations. The committee requested the justice ministry to include the regulations in its online marriage contracts, and the culture and information ministry to promote awareness programmes about the negative psychological and social aspects of underage marriages.
The daughters should be made fully aware that they cannot be forced into marriage and that they should choose their future husbands carefully, the committee said.
